Elissa and I just completed the UTD Technical Diver 1 class with Andrew Georgitsis.
At the end, the class made local diving more enjoyable for us. Elissa is more excited about MoCal waters than ever before. We both learned a good deal about ourselves and our team. And we picked up new techniques [...]

As the foundation of technical training, GUE’s Fundamentals of Diving or UTD’s Essentials of Technical Diving (formerly Intro-To-Tech) are an important stepping stone for many divers. The skills and techniques taught and tested are quite different than what most divers experience in their recreational dives.
Another class worth noting is the UTD Essentials course. [...]

Day 2 – OW and Cave
“This is a sidemount course, not a cave diving course.”
In the morning, we met at Cuzel and loaded Steve’s truck. I took great pleasure in just loading single AL80s versus manifolded doubles. Not only was transport less straining on the body, but manipulating the single tanks on the [...]

Rough day back in cold water

Since we’re taking UTD Tech 1 within a [...]

This past February, I took a cave diving sidemount course with Steve Bogaerts.
I’ll profess that it was curiosity rather than necessity that got me to sign up for a sidemount class. While I do like to peek my head into small holes, I have plenty of backmount friendly caves yet to explore. [...]

Cave diving in sidemount

I signed up for a sidemount cave course with Steve Bogaerts, and first impressions are amazing.
One thing about sidemount – it’s a very liberating way to dive. Hadn’t thought of how it’d feel to dive in sidemount much. I had only considered it as a tool for tighter passages. The one [...]

Diving doubles with a Compact Car

Over the past 4 years, we have rented a variety of cars in the Yucatan. They range from a minivan to a compact car. My favorite is probably a VW Pointer Station Wagon from Easy Way Car Rental.
On a couple occasions, we have rented a Dodge Attitude from Hertz.
The trunk is roomy for [...]

Hertz Rental Car in Cancun

Hertz in Cancun can be rough. At peak times, waits can easily be over an hour. Often, the car that you rent via Hertz.com will not be what you get at the airport.
If you’re fortunate, you will be upgraded to larger vehicle. Other times, you’ll get another car, “in the same class.” [...]
